Legal Requirements

What you need to homeschool legally in Georgia

Notification
Submit a Declaration of Intent to the local school superintendent each year before home education begins.
Required Subjects
Reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.
Testing
Standardized testing required every 3 years, beginning at the end of 3rd grade (i.e., grades 3, 6, 9, 12). Results must be kept on file but are not submitted to the state.
Portfolio / Records
Progress reports and records must be maintained by the parent but are not required to be submitted to any authority.

Diploma Issued By
Parent issues the high school diploma.
Credit Requirements
No specific credit requirements are mandated by the state of Georgia.
Notes
Georgia's Responsible Home School Coalition (RHSC) recommends approximately 17 credits for college readiness, though this is not a state requirement. Families have full discretion in setting their own diploma standards.
