Legal Requirements
What you need to homeschool legally in Georgia
- Notification
- Submit a Declaration of Intent to the local school superintendent each year before home education begins.
- Required Subjects
- Reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.
- Testing
- Standardized testing required every 3 years, beginning at the end of 3rd grade (i.e., grades 3, 6, 9, 12). Results must be kept on file but are not submitted to the state.
- Portfolio / Records
- Progress reports and records must be maintained by the parent but are not required to be submitted to any authority.

- Parent issues the high school diploma.
- Credit Requirements
- No specific credit requirements are mandated by the state of Georgia.
- Notes
- Georgia's Responsible Home School Coalition (RHSC) recommends approximately 17 credits for college readiness, though this is not a state requirement. Families have full discretion in setting their own diploma standards.
